Gus Van Sants The Sea of Trees fortæller historien om mødet mellem to mænd, der begge er taget til Aokigahara-skoven for foden af bjerget Mont Fuji i Japan for at begå selvmord. Amerikaneren Arthur Brennan (Matthew McConaughey) er lige ved at gøre en ende på sit liv, da han ser en såret mand, Takumi (Ken Watanabe), og beslutter at hjælpe ham. Sammen begiver de sig ud af skoven, mens flashback-sekvenser belyser rødderne til deres smerte.
